Hello Blood Harmonists!
I have been showing up in/on things! First, I wrote the highs and lows for Jo Piazza’s awesome newsletter
. I even drew one of my favorite things, a tiny can of Pepsi.I also got to read a question I submitted on
! It was part of a very interesting episode about the politics of backyard chicken keeping. Tune in at 30:50 to hear my dulcet tones asking about communicable diseases and backyard poultry.1Cartoons
And this one:
Music
The reliably incredible NTS Radio did a Sounds on Screen: Parker Posey special featuring clips of her dialogue and soundtrack selections from her shows and movies. I was particularly thrilled to hear dialogue from Kicking and Screaming and Party Girl.
Some Things to Recommend:
I got this shaver for my sweaters because they all started to pill at the same time.2 It really does work without damaging the material! Also, it looks like a vibrator. So that’s funny. Don’t use it as one though.
I love this t-shirt which I get from the same place where I buy clothes for my son. It’s so soft and nice.
I haven’t purchased anything from this line yet but I just adore that they are continuing on with all of their cool mending over there at Eileen Fisher.
Indivisible started a great campaign called Stop the Cuts. If you sign up, they send you the addresses of five people in your neighborhood who might be receptive to discussing ways to stop cuts to Medicaid and SNAP along with a script and written materials to leave in case folks aren’t home. I don’t particularly love canvassing3 but this is very local and lowkey.
I’m currently reading O Sinners! by Nicole Cuffy and I’m finding it quite engrossing. Here’s the blurb: in a “novel that sweeps from present-day California to the Vietnam War and back, a grieving young man is drawn into the orbit of a charismatic cult leader who forces him to reconsider why people give up control—and what it takes, ultimately, to find one’s place in the world.”4
It’s my friend Sasha’s birthday today! Happy birthday Sasha! I’m sorry you have COVID. I made this cake for her. It’s vegan and gluten-free. I used this flour:
It turned out well!
I was complaining to my husband this morning that I haven’t been able to get a good picture of a southern magnolia bloom5 and he sent me this lovely one from our backyard. The flowers are so voluptuous and fragile. I love that we have the first burst of magnolias in the very early spring and then we get this bonus round in May.
Power Broker Update: 48 hours, 33 minutes
Thank you for reading! I’m so glad that you are here!
My summer mix is in process but you can check out my B sides playlist which is ever-expanding and now clocks in at 24 hours in length.
And thanks to Anne Helen Peterson for appreciating my attendance at a lecture on infectious diseases! Little does she know that I’m a medical professional and I went to it FOR FUN.
Planned obsolescence? Annoying! Does de-pilling your sweaters count as right to repair?
But I can write postcards to voters for days!
I can already tell that this book would make a great movie or limited series and I believe that Tramell Tillman from Severance should play the lead.
The most ephemeral of the magnolias.
Excellent guest post!
